How to Focus on Improving Your Health in the New Year

The new year is often when most people set resolutions and vow to improve their lives over the coming twelve months. Many of these resolutions involve losing weight or earning more money. But aside from improving their appearance or their bank balance, there is one meaningful resolution that is well worth making this new year. Focusing on improving your health in 2022 is a new year’s resolution that will make a significant difference in your life. Here are some of the ways you can focus on improving your health in the coming year and make some really positive changes in your life:

Identify Your Goals

It is hard to reach your goals if you are not entirely sure what you want to achieve. Deciding on specific areas of your health you hope to improve will help make it easier to focus on achieving this. Simply saying you want to get healthy can make it hard to measure your progress and challenging to see measurable results. But, setting specific goals such as exercising three times a week or breaking free from an addictive habit will ensure you have something clear to aim for, which will help you to stay on track.

Understand What’s Holding You Back

Often new year’s resolutions are goals people want to achieve throughout the year but keep delaying. Thinking about why you have been holding back on your resolutions is an excellent way to break through the barriers preventing you from taking action. Once you have identified what is preventing you from reaching your goals, you can establish methods to overcome these barriers. When you know what has been holding you back in the past, you should find it easier to commit to successfully reaching your goals.

Make a Plan

After deciding what you hope to achieve from your resolution and identifying the barriers holding you back, it is time to begin making plans. With a clear plan, you can work towards your goals, making steady progress along the way. Thinking about the practical methods you can use to achieve your goals will provide you with a road map to get started and guide you toward achieving them. Sometimes, getting started on your journey towards achieving a goal is the hardest part. So, putting an action plan in place should help you to start and then continue onwards towards realizing your goal. Maybe you plan to beat an addiction, so taking a look at rehablist.org is a great starting point when making your plan, or perhaps you want to take a physical exam at your doctor’s office and make your health plans based on this. Whatever your situation, making a plan with a clear starting point is valuable.

Seek Support

Trying to commit to something as important as improving your health can be challenging, so it is helpful to seek support. Finding the proper help will make it so much easier for you to commit to focusing on your health in the new year and beyond.

Health, they say, is wealth, and even though it is not quantifiable, it’s as crucial as what you may have in your bank account. With an average life expectancy in the US pegged at 79 years, it may indicate a pretty good state of health among the citizenry.  However, it is still necessary to find out how important your well-being is. Below is a discussion of some reasons.

  1. Improves your social skills

Human beings are social creatures, and if you’ve ever wondered the meaning behind this, now is the time to find out. Everybody belongs to a family, and in addition to that, everyone thrives on friendships and relationships to create a reliable support system. The fundamental element of being a social creature is the dependence on cooperation. Usually, when you have good well-being, you tend to have a healthy need to be more social. With a clean bill of health, nothing may stop you from attending social events or any other program that makes you happy.

This also creates an opportunity to build or enhance your social skills. Good social skills appear to be endearing traits that others look out for. They are a set of skills that can determine how others perceive you. All these are centered on your well-being, indicating how important it can be to you.

  1. Improves work-life balance

The average American spends about forty-one hours at work, making it mandatory to take better health care. Everyday ailments and questionable lifestyle practices negatively impact work and personal life. However, in sharp contrast, a clean bill of health can be the foundation you need to work on your work-life balance. There has been a lot of talk about finding the perfect balance between these two critical areas of a person’s life.

Unfortunately, on many occasions, the demands of work can overshadow every other thing in your life, leaving the other parts in a questionable state. When you consider the number of hours people spend at the workplace, it helps you understand why it is critical to have an appreciable state of well-being to show up every day of the working week. Those unable to withstand the pressures succumb to unhealthy activities to help them cope. If that is you, it would be a great idea to check out facilities like https://www.sunshinebehavioralhealth.com/texas/corpus-christi/, which are geared towards assisting people who towed that line to get back to their healthy selves.

  1. It helps boost your self-esteem and self-confidence

Your well-being encompasses your physical, emotional, and mental state. When all three are in harmony, you can be said to have a healthy well-being. However, when one of the three performs below the required standards, it can take a toll on your confidence and self-esteem. When people find themselves on the other side of the health fence, it becomes difficult to maintain their sense of worth.

If left unattended, it can spiral into a self-blame game. Indeed, everybody loves to feel capable of taking good care of themselves. Anything away from that can cause self-doubt and gradual disinterest in what happens next. Therefore, make it your mission to maintain a balanced state of well-being at all times.

5 Ways To Get Your Kids To Be Physically Active

Like adults, children need to get some exercise and be physically fit. Encouraging your kids to exercise regularly will boost their immune system, help them maintain a healthy weight, and protect them from several diseases. According to research, about 80% of kids between 11 and 17 aren’t as physically active as they should be. This can be attributed to the accessibility of technology. Here are some ways to get your kids to be physically active.

  1. Set a good example

Kids are more likely to remember a lesson if they see a practical example in action. Therefore, to encourage your kids to exercise more, being a good role model will give them the push they need. If your kids often see you exercising, they’ll most likely mimic you, giving you an excellent opportunity to teach them about the importance of being physically active.

  1. Get everyone involved

Exercising together can be a great way to bond with your kids, no matter the activity. You can get your kids involved by signing up for an activity you all enjoy, such as playing soccer together, swimming, playing games in the park, etc. You can even consider inviting some of your kids’ friends over occasionally to take part in these activities. Getting everyone involved will help sustain your kids’ interest and get them to be more physically active. While engaging in such activities, remember to have items such as children’s ice packs on hand to apply if your kids have a minor injury.

  1. Walk more

If there are activities where you can walk instead of taking a car, you can consider doing so with your kids. For instance, you can take an early morning walk in the park or during the weekend, depending on your schedule. You can also walk to the grocery store if it’s close by or walk your kids to school. While walking, remember to be safety-conscious and keep an idea on your kids at all times.

  1. Reduce screen time

Studies show that children are less physically active because they spend more time behind the screen playing video games, watching TV, etc. Therefore, one great way to get your kids to be physically active is to limit their screen time and replace it with activities that will get them on the move. Even when you and your kids are watching TV together, you can still sneak in a little physical activity by stretching together, dancing to some music, or doing some hula hoops during commercial breaks. Doing this enables you to find fun ways to encourage your kids to do more than sit behind the screen.

  1. Give them gifts that encourage them to be physically active

Whether it’s for their birthday, a holiday, or just a random day, the gifts you give your kids can encourage them to be physically active. You can consider options such as bicycles, balls, skates, etc. Giving them such gifts allows you to spend more time with them as you teach them how to use it, and will also lead them to spend more time exercising as they enjoy putting these gifts to good use.

How to Improve Your Mental Health from Today Onward

**Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you choose to make a purchase.

As the world becomes more connected, it's easier for people to feel like they're not enough. This can lead to low self-esteem and mental health issues that impact your relationships with others and yourself. However, there are many ways you can improve your mental health from today onwards - here are just a few of them!

via Pexels

#1 Meditate

The first step to improving your mental health from today is learning how to meditate. Meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety, as well as improve memory and focus over time. In order to start a meditation practice, it's best for you to try out different types of yoga mats until you find one that works for you. For example, you could sit down with a paper or journal in silence, take a walk outside while breathing deeply, listen to calming music - there are endless ways to meditate!

Just make sure not to do anything too strenuous before bedtime so that you get the most restful sleep possible. Be patient with yourself if, at first, this seems challenging-it takes effort, but it will be worth it once you notice changes in your moods and energy levels over time.

#2 Practice mindfulness

Number two on the list of how to improve your mental health from today is practising mindfulness. Mindfulness can help you become more aware and present in every moment, which then helps you be less reactive towards things that stress you out or make you feel insecure. Practising mindfulness doesn't need to take a lot of time either - it could mean taking notice of the colours around you as you walk down the street, noticing sounds like birds chirping or wind rushing past. It all counts!

#3 Exercise

Number three on the list of things you can do to improve your mental health from today is a simple one - exercise. Exercise helps release endorphins which in turn make you feel happier and less stressed. It also has even been shown in scientific studies that regular physical activity reduces anxiety, depression, insomnia and many other common mental health issues people experience every day.

So it's safe to say when it comes to improving your mental health from today onwards, getting up off the couch will be beneficial for your mind as well as body! But, of course, even just going outside for a walk or taking an extra trip up and down the stairs at work counts, too, so don't put off being active any longer if this hasn't been off your daily routine until now.

And if you're not a fan of going to the gym, that's okay! There are plenty of other options for exercising at home or outside, and since we all know how busy life can get sometimes, then it makes sense that having an exercise routine that doesn't require much time is ideal.

#4 Cut any negativity from your life

The final step to improving your mental health from today is cutting any negativity from your life. Negative people who are critical of you or others can be draining on a physical and emotional level, even if they're family members, friends or co-workers. So why not start by saying something nice about yourself once a day? This helps counter the negative thoughts that might otherwise get stuck in our heads without us realising them.

The road to recovery is far from being an easy trip. This is a journey that has a lot of bumps, ups, downs, forks in the road, and lots of obstacles. There may be an array of reasons why you’re wanting to begin the recovery process. Maybe you’re fed up with your past decisions? You could just want to end this dependency, maybe you just want to improve your life for the better. There are plenty of reasons why addicts end their addictions, and it’s possible.

If you’re looking to end this, it’s first important to understand how difficult it’s going to be but how worth it that it’s going to be in the end. No matter your reason behind this big decision, here are some tips to help you get started on this recovery journey.

Start by being honest about your motives

It’s fantastic that you’re wanting to begin living a sober life! With that in mind, it’s very important to understand why you’re wanting to do this. What is the cause behind wanting to get sober? What was the cause of your addiction in the first place? Was it due to trauma? A physical injury? Mental health? If you’re wanting to get mental health treatment, then you must first begin by addressing what caused you down the path you were on. These questions and thoughts must be raised, they cannot go unaddressed. If left unaddressed, then there is a higher chance of a relapse.

Look into services you can use to help out

There are thankfully plenty of ways to seek help for addictions. While there are plenty of different types of addictions, it’s important to find a helpful service or facility that can help with yours. If you’re addicted to alcohol or substances such as drugs, then it’s very important to look for rehab. If you are someone with other addictions such as food, gambling, sex, shopping, or anything else then it’s very important to find the right mental health professional to assist you.

Recovering from an addiction isn’t entirely a one-size-fits-all. There are many different types of addictions, reasons for getting an addiction, and other factors that need to be taken into account as well.  This is why it’s very important to do thorough research on a service, facility, or specialist that can help you out.

Read success stories

Reading success stories can help a lot. This is a great push to remind you that if someone else can recover, then you can too. Sometimes, we just convince ourselves that we’re not strong enough. This is already making you lose the battle! You have to surround yourself with positivity. You need to believe that you can recover and reading other people’s recovery success stories is going to be that helpful push you need to remind you that you’re more than capable of getting through this recovery journey.

Don’t be afraid to open up about your recovery journey

Simple practices will help your mental health and they’ll also help you with your emotions. This also massively helps with health checks. If you want to build up a strong support system then you can’t shy away from this journey. Be completely open, as this is going to help your communication skills, and it’s also going to allow you to cope with this in a healthy manner. Your support system is still going to be there, and they’re still going to love you. Even during your low points, they want to be there to help. So you have to be open about this, don’t be afraid to open up about the milestones that you reach.

PPD & Me: 5 Tips That Can Help You Manage The Situation

Post Partum Depression is a very common issue facing new mothers and the symptoms can feel even worse in the post pandemic era. After all, we all (not just parents) have been more prone to bouts of sadness and a lack of energy. The truth is that there is no magic cure for the situation. On a brighter note, however, you can learn to manage PPD in a better manner.

The first step is to accept the situation and realize that it’s not your fault. You wouldn’t punish yourself for any other health complaint and should never consider ignoring PDD. Focus on the following responses, and you should see a noticeable improvement in the way you feel.

Focus on providing for your child

Becoming a parent changes your life forever. Even when you do not feel in control of personal matters, giving your child the best start in life will be a major triumph. Experts at Foryourlittleone can help you find the perfect baby products for the nursery and daily life. Aside from the right surroundings, you will want to master some nutritious meals for when your baby reaches the wearing stage. Remember that your childcare workers are available to answer your questions and provide any advice that you may require too.

Establish a sense of organization

PPD can often leave you feeling all over the place. Therefore, restoring a sense of control should be one of the top items on your agenda. While it’s great to set long-term goals, learning to take each day as a new challenge is equally vital. There are many reasons to create a daily routine, but it will ultimately allow you to stay on the right track at all times. Likewise, you will find that a schedule is hugely beneficial for your child. It may help you with issues like establishing a positive sleep routine.

Talk

As a new parent, most of your time is dedicated to your child. While it is an amazing and beautiful thing, there is no doubt that it can leave you feeling a little lonely from time to time. Social activities with other adults will have a positive impact, and this should include time with non-parents too. Perhaps more importantly, you must also remember that keeping your PPD locked up inside will do you no favors. Mental health experts are available while even using forums like Whattoexpect can be useful. You will no longer feel alone on this journey.

Try to reduce stress

It would be impossible to eliminate stress from your life. However, high stress levels will continue to make your PPD symptoms feel worse. So, any opportunity to reduce stress should be grabbed with both hands. Gaining control of your financial health is a good starting point. Avoiding people and habits that trigger stress or responses that indirectly cause stress will help. If nothing else, it will free your mind and allow you to enjoy the moments where PPD isn’t in control.

Live Healthily

As a new parent, your child will be the priority. Still, you must remember that a healthy and happy mom is a better mom. With this in mind, there should be no sense of guilt about taking care of yourself. Make time for meditation and exercise. Eat the right foods. And be OK with the fact that you need personal hobbies and daily activities that focus on you rather than your child. In many cases, your baby will still be involved. Even when they aren’t, the balanced lifestyle will allow you to become an even better parent while also reducing PPD.

Do Word Puzzles Keep Your Mind Sharp Or Not?

**Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you choose to make a purchase.

For years, companies have been encouraging adults to engage in regular “brain training” to train their neurons, just like their muscles, and make them stronger. But the relationship between solving puzzles and cognitive performance is anything but clear cut. Doing crosswords doesn’t seem to have a one-to-one relationship with the sharpness of our minds. So what the heck is going on?

What Does The Evidence Say?

When psychologists and brain researchers examined the question, they found conflicting results. A 2001 study in Brain and Cognition, for instance, found that as people get older, they perform worse on games designed to test working memory. Younger subjects almost always had the upper hand.

A study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology from 1999 found that older people who do crosswords don’t experience any reduction in the speed of cognitive decline. So, the researchers concluded that the brain might not be analogous to muscle tissue at all.

But then another study in Psychology of Aging in 2000, found that doing crosswords regularly did, in fact, reduce the speed of memory loss as people get older.

So what the heck is going on here? Can you really train your brain like the rest of your body to keep it youthful?

The Importance Of Hidden Information

Although the science is mixed, some researchers think that certain types of word puzzles can actually help cognition.

Consider a riddle, “what is full of holes but still carries water?”

You can’t just read the statement and then think it through analytically to solve it. You won’t get anywhere. No matter how long you stare at it, the answer won’t pop out at you from the words on the page.

Instead, you have to think “out of the box,” drawing on your knowledge of context. Eventually, if you think broadly enough, the idea of a sponge will enter your mind, and you will solve the riddle.

The cognitive processes here are profound. Not only do you have to unscramble the problem, but you also have to open yourself up to novel ideas. Otherwise, you can’t resolve the riddle at all. It is a necessary part of the process.

Finding hidden information is essentially what riddles are all about. They appear to allude to something that doesn’t make sense on the surface, but that can be resolved with the right idea.

Riddles have appealed to people down the centuries, partly because their solutions are so unexpected and novel. You get a buzz of satisfaction when you solve one that makes you want to go on and do the next.

Word puzzles, like riddles, therefore, could help train the mind by creating new connections in a way that many other types of problems don’t. Perhaps that’s why there have been mixed results in the literature. Performing rote calculations (in sudoku, for instance) uses well-worn neural pathways. But solving a riddle necessarily implies having to come up with an entirely novel solution.

What do you think? Can solving riddles make you a better thinker overall?

7 Health Worries You Shouldn’t Have to Deal With Right Now

**Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you choose to make a purchase.

Struggling with one specific health issue every day can seem daunting and overwhelming; you may even feel as though there is no way to escape. There is nothing more debilitating than waking up with a continual symptom, ache or pain that you just don’t know how to get rid of.

When you’re struggling with aspects of your health, life can seem like too much to manage. Try not to enter panic mode right away as this will cause more stress and may even heighten your symptoms to another level. Luckily, there are a number of ways in which you can deal with these unwanted health hang-ups and pains. Going to the doctor right now is nearly impossible; surgeries are busier than ever and you simply don’t have time in your schedule to leave the house. Although medical advice is highly advised, there are several ways to alleviate symptoms yourself. With a mixture of professional advice and some tried and tested home remedies, you will be back on track with your health in no time.

1.Your Eyesight

This is something you definitely take for granted on a daily basis. You have never had to deal with any eyesight problems before, so why would they cross your mind? At the moment you might be experiencing some rather unusual symptoms that might prompt you to visit an eye doctor near me. Booking regular eyesight tests are so important as this will not only keep your eyesight in check, but it will help to detect wider health issues too such as diabetes and high blood pressure. If you find yourself straining to see the television or signs on the road when you’re driving, you definitely need to book in for an eye test as soon as possible. Like many people right now, your job probably relies heavily on staring at a computer screen all day. Without the proper measures in place, your eyes will be put into regular stress and strain. Do as much as you can to rest your eyes when possible; look away from your screen every twenty minutes and focus on something that is further away. These daily habits will protect your eye health and prevent your symptoms from getting worse. Remember that postponing appointments with your optician can lead to more harm than good, so it’s definitely worth getting checked out as soon as possible to put your mind at ease.

2. Sore Back

Dealing with daily back pain is something you can’t forget about when you’re trying to get out and about or complete daily tasks around the house. Back pain can transform into something so severe that it even prevents you from going to work or taking care of your loved ones. Although there are many pain relief methods out there in the form of tablets, you could consider other methods. A chiropractor or osteopath will be able to provide you with some in-depth information about what’s going wrong inside your body right now. With a few sessions of professional treatment, your aches and pains might even disappear altogether.

3. Hearing Problems

Being unable to hear conversations properly is not only frustrating, but it is hindering your ability to create connections with people. You might not be able to hear people talking during meetings at work and you may need to turn the television volume right up every evening. Living like this isn’t sustainable, so why not look into hearing aids? No matter how young or old you are hearing aids come in all sorts of discreet and effective styles. Speak to a medical professional if you think you’re in need of hearing aids; they will be able to advise you on which ones to choose.

4. Skin

When you’re going through skin problems it can be very difficult to go about your life as normal. You can’t always cover up your blemishes with makeup; very often it stems much deeper than this. Whether you have cystic acne or eczema, you need to seek out advice from a dermatologist if you can. Reading about the latest skin care tips online won’t do you any good, because they are not tailored to your unique needs. When your best friend recommends a life changing skin product to you, it may not necessarily work for your skin type. This is why it’s so important to book an appointment with a registered skincare specialist. Not only will they be able to carry out an in depth analysis of your skin cells, pigmentation and surface appearance, they will also be able to offer you tailored advice that is specific to your skin type.

5. Hair

Your hair is such a huge part of your identity, when something goes wrong, you don’t feel like yourself. There are so many people living with alopecia, which is when your hair falls out of your head, eyebrows and even parts of your face if you’re a male. This can be embarrassing and knock your confidence. Although there are no cures for alopecia there are a number of ways to mask the side effects. Opt for a hairstyle that makes your hair loss less obvious or even try extensions or wigs if it will give you a boost in confidence.

6. Headaches

Suffering from ongoing headaches and migraines can be extremely painful; a lot of over the counter medication doesn’t even do anything to alleviate the symptoms. Persistent headaches in the same spot may be a sign of an underlying medical issue, so try not to pop too many painkillers if this is the case. You should definitely seek out advice from a medical professional and they will be able to conduct further tests.

7. Anxiety

Although this is a hidden health problem, anxiety is so real amongst many people. So many members of society are suffering from anxiety right now and they aren’t opening up about it in an honest and healthy way. If you think you have depression or anxiety, you don’t have to go through this alone. Confide in a friend or family member that you trust and they will be there with a listening ear. If you don’t think any of your immediate loved ones will understand the problem, you can speak to therapists and online counselors who will guide you through various techniques. Obviously, every individual is completely unique so it depends on your circumstances. As soon as you start opening up about how you feel, you will start to make slow and gradual improvements with regards to your mental health.

All in all, you don’t need to deal with any of these ongoing health issues. Not only are they irritating, but they are also highly inconvenient. Many of these health problems can prevent you from feeling confident or going about your day to day life. Your first port of call should always be seeking medical advice. Whether you call up your medical practitioner on the phone or you make an appointment online; this will always help to put your mind at ease during these rough times with your health. Your symptoms may worsen if you don’t take action and do something as quickly as possible. So make sure you don’t keep dealing with these health hang ups; try at home remedies and seek out professional advice as soon as you can. Once your mind has been put at ease, you will feel happier, healthier and so much more content in your life.
